Before You Call Us To Design Your Logo

The process of creating a corporate identity is a daunting one, particularly for new businesses. Establishing your business's corporate or company identity is so much more than just a new logo, it's practically a new way of life. Without actually having gone through it before, there is just simply no way to know what to expect. Quite frankly, it's a very alien and different experience for most people.

With that in mind, here are a few tips and pointers to help you get a better feel for what to expect from us and what we expect from you to make the whole design process go a little more smoothly.

Sometimes a business owner will feel that they need to know what kind of logo they want before they contact us (or any other designer). Some of the logo sweatshops out there will even encourage you to think of a design before contacting them.

Nonsense.

You are paying for creative ideas. That's our job. Be wary of any design studio that expects you to come to them with the concepts. You'll simply wind up paying them for your own ideas.

Certainly, inspiration may come to you and you may have an image in mind when you call, but don't give yourself headaches thinking that you must provide us with some concrete direction for your logo. Such preconceptions actually hinder the creative process and may limit the potential for your design. We welcome and encourage your input, but we also fully expect to work for our money.

So what do you need to do before you call us? Gather materials. We will want to know as much about your business as we can — its personality, its goals, its customers. Think of it kind of like buying a present. If you don't know the person, you'll be forced to keep your present pretty generic. The better you know them, the easier it is to tailor the gift to their personality. Be prepared to let us get to know you.

Next, figure out your budget. Corporate identity work may be the single most important investment you will make for your company and it is an investment that doesn't end at the conclusion of the logo design process. Think about it, your logo is what people will see and remember. It may very well be plastered on every product you sell and on every ad you place for potentially the life of your company.

Professional corporate identity work is not cheap. On the other hand, it doesn't have to break your bank. Determining your budget will assist us in determining what we can do for you.

Finally, keep an open mind and try to have fun. Creating a brand new identity for your business (or revamping an old image) is an exciting and rare process. Our goal is to make it an enjoyable and positive experience.
